The TPS25865QRPQRQ1 is an integrated USB charging port solution that includes a synchronous high-efficiency DC/DC converter with integrated detection and control functions to implement USB battery charging specification 1.2 on dual Type-A ports.

The TPS25865QRPQRQ1 integrates a monolithic, synchronous, rectifying, step-down switch-mode converter with internal power MOSFETs and two USB current-limit switches with charging port auto-detection. The TPS2586x-Q1 provides a compact solution that achieves excellent load and line regulation over a wide input supply voltage range. This synchronous buck regulator features peak current mode control and uses internal compensation to simplify design. For the TPS25865-Q1, there is a resistor on the FREQ pin that can be used to set the switching frequency between 200kHz and 800kHz. For the TPS25864-Q1, there is a resistor on the FREQ pin that can be used to set the switching frequency between 200kHz and 3MHz. Operation below 400kHz enables higher system efficiency, while operation above 2.1MHz avoids the AM radio band and enables the use of smaller inductors.
The TPS25865QRPQRQ1 integrates standard battery charging (version 1.2) and provides the electrical characteristics required for a Type-A USB device that utilizes USB data line signals to determine the current source capability of a USB port. The TPS2586X-Q1 also integrates an OUT power switch that can supply a maximum of 200mA to the auxiliary load. TPS25865QRPQRQ1 supports intelligent thermal management. The USB output voltage can be adjusted through the TS pin based on temperature detection. The TPS2586x-Q1 must connect an NTC thermistor on the TS pin to monitor the ambient temperature or the PCB board temperature, depending on where the NTC thermistor is placed in the USB charging module or the PCB board. Choosing different NTC thermistor and bottom series resistors can change the temperature threshold of load dump.
The TPS25865QRPQRQ1 has four selectable USB output voltage settings: 5.1V, 5.17V, 5.3V, and 5.4V. The TPS2586x-Q1 integrates a precision current sense amplifier for cable drop compensation and USB port current limiting. Cable compensation is only available when the output voltage is set to 5.17V. Cable compensation voltage is 90mV at 2.4A output current. Cable compensation enables the buck regulator output voltage to vary linearly with load current to counteract the voltage drop due to wire resistance in the automotive cabling, helping portable devices achieve optimal current and voltage charging under heavy loads. Regardless of the load current, the bus voltage measured across the connected portable device remains approximately constant, allowing the portable device's battery charger to operate optimally.
The TPS25865QRPQRQ1 provides several safety features for USB charging and system operation, including external negative thermistor monitoring, cycle-by-cycle current limit, hiccup short-circuit protection, undervoltage lockout, BUS overcurrent, OUT overcurrent, and die overtemperature protection.
