The LM5180 is a primary-side regulated (PSR) flyback converter with high efficiency over a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 65V. The isolated output voltage is sampled from the primary-side flyback voltage, so there is no need for an optocoupler, voltage reference, or third winding of a transformer for output voltage regulation. The high level of integration enables simple and reliable high-density designs where only one component crosses the isolation barrier. The use of boundary conduction mode (BCM) switching enables a compact magnetic solution and better than ±1.5% load and line regulation. An integrated 100V power MOSFET is capable of delivering up to 7W of output power with increased headroom against line transients.

The LM5180 converter simplifies the implementation of isolated DC/DC power supplies with optional features to optimize the performance of the target end equipment. The device sets the output voltage with a single resistor, while an optional resistor improves output voltage accuracy by offsetting the thermal coefficient of voltage drop of the flyback diode. Additional features include internal fixed or externally programmable soft start, selectable bias supply connection for higher efficiency, precision enable input for adjustable line UVLO with hysteresis, hiccup mode overload protection with auto recovery feature thermal shutdown protection.
