Born in 1988 in Palo Alto, California, the company was founded in 1988 by Dr. Harari Eli, an international authority in the field of non-volatile memory technology. In November 1995, SanDisk became a publicly traded company with the NASDAQ symbol SNDK. In 2004, SanDisk's revenue reached $1.8 billion. The company has more than 5,000 employees worldwide. The company is headquartered in Milpitas, California, USA. SanDisk products are being sold through more than 260,000 retail stores worldwide.

SanDisk's Asia Pacific headquarters is located in Hong Kong. SanDisk also has sales offices in Shanghai, Taipei and Seoul, and through original equipment manufacturer (OEM) channels and distributors in numerous Asian countries and regions including China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines and retailer network to sell its products.

At the end of 2006, SanDisk established its first manufacturing plant in Shanghai, China, using the most advanced manufacturing technology to produce top products in the industry. In October 2015, SanDisk was acquired by Western Digital for $19 billion.
