French telecommunications group Orange launched Africa's first 5G network in Botswana on Friday, 12 November. According to reports, Orange's 5G network will cover 30 percent of the country's population, including residents living in the two largest cities of Gaborone and Francistown.

Coverage will be extended to other cities early next year, the company said.

It is worth noting that while most Chinese users are already enjoying the convenience of 5G and 5G phones are becoming more and more affordable, they are still out of reach for the majority of the African population.

So Orange is more concerned with 5G itself than with providing convenience to their customers. After all, Africa has a low population density and it is not economical to deploy infrastructure such as fibre and base stations there.

"For us, the main usage scenario is fixed wireless access, which means [users] can get online at home," says Orange Botswana's chief executive.

Orange now has a presence in 18 countries in Africa and the Middle East, accounting for more than 60 per cent of the company's total mobile customers and revenues of €6.4 billion (approximately R46.912 billion), while there are currently more than 44 million 4G subscribers in the region.

Orange's Middle East and Africa CEO said the company aims to roll out 5G networks in around six countries by 2023, most likely starting with Jordan.

"We have already reached an agreement with the government on the conditions for the launch of 5G in Jordan. Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal are likely to follow suit, but we are still discussing the regulatory conditions."
